This handbook, continuously improved since 1984, provides my preference on editorial style, effective communication, grammar, punctuation, terminology, abbreviations, acronyms, and initialisms. Is the abbreviation for the military rank of O-6 a Col., a COL, or a CAPT? It depends on the military branch of service (Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard). Get that wrong for Navy evaluators and they will know you don’t have a clue how to “hit the deck running”. (It is CAPT for the Navy, all caps, no period.)
